This book contains the proceedings of the first academic meeting devoted solely to Star Trek, which was held in Malta in July 2014. The article "The Raelian hypothesis: Star Trek-like origin and spread of intelligent life in the galaxy" is one among the 12 presentations that were selected to be included in this book. This is the first time the Raelian hypothesis is investigated as a scientific hypothesis, and its plausibility examined under the light of today's scientific knowledge.
The Raelian hypothesis: Star Trek-like origin and spread of intelligent life in the galaxyDamien Marsic, PhDUniversity of FloridaDepartment of PediatricsGainesville, FL 32610, United StatesPhone: 1-352-273-8159Email: damien.marsic@gmail.com ABSTRACT In the Star Trek episode "The Chase", the protagonists learn that all humanoid life in our galaxy (Humans, Romulans, Klingons and Cardassians) share a common origin: they are all the result of genetic engineering by the first humanoid species in the galaxy. The exponential nature of technological progress in our terrestrial civilization suggests that habitable planets in our region of the universe might become populated by our own creatures in the distant future, making us Founders of new intelligent life made in our image. But what if we are not the first intelligent life in our galaxy? Is it possible that life on Earth is the result of a scientific experiment by an advanced extra-terrestrial civilization? In this presentation we will explore this fascinating hypothesis, first proposed by the Raelian Movement 20 years before "The Chase" episode, and examine how it could be reconciled with modern science, from paleontology to genomics.
Introduction The Star Trek Expanded Universe web site lists 84 “hybrid characters” (“Hybrids”), defined as humanoid persons with “two or more different species in their ancestry”, that have appeared in one or more Star Trek episodes. In many cases, these so-called hybrids are perfectly fertile and have their own offspring, which, to a modern biologist, is a clear sign that they are not actual hybrids, and that the supposed different species are in reality sub-species of a single human species. Despite sharing 98% of their genome, as 21st century terrestrial science has discovered, gorillas, chimpanzees and orang-utans are not interfertile, which indicates that a high level of genetic identity is necessary for succesful interbreeding, an extremely unlikely outcome of life evolving independantly on different planets. Indeed, during the Chase episode (Frakes), the Enterprise crew discovered that terrestrial humans shared a common ancestry with Romulans, Klingons, Cardassians and other humanoids. They learned that they were the products of a genetic experiment by the first humanoid species in the Milky Way laxy, which had seeded several planets with its own DNA. The seeding likely involved not mere primitive life, but the human genome itself, as interbreeding requires a common genetic program, which does not exclude the possibility of large phenotypic variability. Therefore, morphological differences between Terrans, Romulans, Klingons and other humanoids are of the same nature as those between Chinese, African or European individuals on today's planet Earth for example. A common genetic program is shared, but implemented using different parameters. Are we living in a Star Trek-like universe?

Box 570935 Las Vegas NV 89157-0935Corresponding author: Mehran Sam, scientist@rael.orgABSTRACTReligious institutions such as the Catholic Church exert enormous influence on the life of large numbers of individuals, despite professing fantastical claims that are seldom questioned or challenged. In this study we tested the Catholic dogma of transubstantiation by DNA analysis. Results showed unequivocally that the rituals performed by the priests during the Eucharist sacrament have no detectable effect on the substance of altar bread at the DNA level. We wish to encourage others to engage in similar studies and help religious organizations rid themselves of superstition and irrational beliefs, thus contributing to elevate fellow human beings.INTRODUCTIONWith 1.2 billion members worldwide, the Roman Catholic Church exerts its influence on a significant portion of the world population. One of the important doctrines of Catholicism affirms that the wheat wafer (also called hostia, host or sacramental bread) used in the sacrament of Eucharist or Holy Communion becomes in actual reality the body of Jesus Christ, in a process called transubstantiation. The doctrine of transubstantiation was officially defined during the council of Trent in 1551 CE and holds that the consecration that takes place during Eucharist literally changes the substance of the bread into the substance of the body of Christ. Understandably, the claim has been viewed with skepticism among non-Catholics, but also among increasing numbers of Catholics who are being disillusioned with the Church's disconnect with today's scientific understanding and its insistence on upholding irrational dogmas. We propose to test the credibility of the transubstantiation dogma by analyzing the substance of consecrated sacramental bread. Host samples collected in Catholic churches during communion were tested for the presence of wheat and human DNA using PCR, and compared to human and wheat controls.MATERIALS & METHODSSamplesConsecrated hosts were collected during communion in 5 different Catholic churches in the United States and Canada and immediately placed into clean plastic bags to avoid contamination. A sample of cultured HEK-293 cells was used as the human control. Unconsecrated altar bread purchased from a church supply store was used as the wheat control.DNA isolationHuman DNA was extracted from the control human cells using the GeneJet genomic DNA purification kit (Thermo Scientific, USA) according to the manufacturer's instructions.Isolation of DNA from the altar bread samples (both consecrated and unconsecrated) was performed as follows. Bread fragments were placed into 2 ml microcentrifuge tubes into which 1.3 ml of DNA extraction solution (150 mM NaCl, 0.05 N NaOH, 2.5 mM EDTA, 0.25% SDS) was added. Tubes were then incubated at 65°C while being shaken at 900 RPM for 20 minutes. The tubes were then centrifuged at 21000 g for 5 minutes and 200 µl of supernatant was transferred to fresh tubes. DNA was purified from the supernatant samples using DNA Clean & Concentrator kit (Zymo Research, USA) according to the manufacturer's instructions.DNA amplificationThe amplification primers used in PCR are listed in Table 1. All samples and controls were amplified using both pairs of primers in separate reactions. PCR mixtures included 0.2 mM each dNTP, 0.2 µM each forward and reverse primer, 1/20 volume template, 25 mU/µl OneTaq DNA polymerase (New England Biolabs, USA) and 1x OneTaq buffer. Cycling parameters were: 30 s initial denaturation at 94°C; 33 cycles of 20 s denaturation at 94°C, 30 s annealing at 52°C and 45 s extension at 68°C; 5 min final extension at 68°C. Amplification products were visualized on a 1.5% agarose electrophoresis gel alongside a 50 bp DNA ladder.RESULTSPrimer pairs that would allow to amplify specifically human and wheat DNA respectively under the same PCR conditions (same annealing temperature and product size range) were searched for in the available literature. Primers F7901 and R8311 [1], which target region 7901 to 8311 of the human mitochondrial genome, and Dgas44-F and Dgas44-R [2], which target the D genome-specific repetitive DNA sequence Dgas44 in wheat, were selected as human-specific and wheat-specific amplification primers respectively (Table 1). An electrophoresis gel showing DNA amplification products is shown in Fig. 1. Negative controls (water as template, lanes NC) show no amplification product, indicating that PCR reagents were free from human or wheat DNA contamination. Human controls (lanes HC) show the expected 411 bp amplification product with human primers and no amplification with wheat primers, confirming that human DNA can be detected using the selected human primers. Wheat controls (lanes WC) show amplification products with both pairs of primers, with a more intense band with wheat primers. The human DNA detected in the wheat control was likely introduced during handling of the bread sample. The 5 consecrated bread samples (lanes 1 to 5) analyzed using wheat primers show the 286 bp band that would be expected for regular bread material but that should be absent if wheat DNA had somehow been changed into human DNA through the consecration performed by priests. Only one sample (number 5) shows a 411 bp PCR product when amplified using human primers, with a much lower band intensity than the 286 bp product obtained with wheat primers. All other consecrated bread samples show no amplification using human primers. Sample 5 is likely a case of human contamination during handling, as inferred by comparison with the wheat control. Taken together, these results are consistent with the consecrated sacramental bread samples being regular bread samples, and inconsistent with the claim of transubstantiation or the idea that the consecration during the Eucharist sacrament would change the wheat DNA into human DNA.DISCUSSIONUsing science to test a religious claimIt could be argued whether supernatural claims can or should be tested by science. The famous view advocated by Stephen Jay Gould that science and religion are “non-overlapping magisteria” [3] has been extensively criticized by both scientists such as Richard Dawkins [4] or Yonathan Fishman [5] and philosophers like Russell Blackford [6]. The transubstantiation claim by the Catholic Church is particularly relevant because of the doctrine's insistence that the transformation of bread into the body of Christ is not symbolic but a physical reality. The claim is both fantastical and easy to test. However, the main reason for this study was to answer requests by former Catholics recovering from dogmatic indoctrination in the hope that it would help others develop informed opinions on the validity of religious dogmas.Rationale for testing DNAAs believers themselves agree that the appearance, taste and texture of sacramental bread are retained after consecration, it is unclear what the “substance” that is allegedly transformed could be. If the host still looks like bread and tastes like bread after having been consecrated, the molecules responsible for the taste and texture can not have been affected. This leaves DNA as the most probable candidate. Indeed, if wheat DNA in a piece of bread could be replaced by human DNA, the change would not affect the bread's texture or taste. On the other hand, it could be argued that DNA represents the actual “substance” of any biological material because it contains the information that defines that material and could be used to create a copy of it. Therefore, testing the transubstantiation claim by DNA analysis seems a quite reasonable approach to take. To critics who would question the assumption that the body of Jesus Christ has human DNA, it can easily be replied that all Christians believe that Jesus had a biological mother (Mary) who was a human being. Uncontroversially, Mary gave her son half of her genome as well as her mitochondrial DNA, no matter who the father was. If Mary or any of her children was tested using the human-specific PCR primers used in this study, the test would be positive, especially because it specifically detects mitochondrial DNA, which is transmitted exclusively by the mother.Ethical concernsThis study could be criticized on ethical grounds for using deception to collect samples. Indeed, the individuals who provided us with the consecrated hosts obtained them during communion, pretending to be believers, and transferred them discretely into plastic bags instead of ingesting them. However, these individuals were all former Catholics who had felt victimized by the Church's dogmatic teachings and saw this action as contributing to their recovery. The moral dilemma of obtaining samples through deception is to be contrasted with the ethics of enrolling non-consenting newborns into a religious organization, endoctrinating children with unquestionable dogmas and instilling fear, guilt and shame in them with long-lasting consequences for their psychological well-being. Anyway, in agreement with our results, we are confident that no sentient being was physically harmed in the course of this study.CONCLUSIONSThis study falsifies the claim that a religious ritual performed by a priest can actually change the substance of a bread wafer into the substance of a human body. It is by no means an attack on religion, but rather a small step in the refutation of superstition and irrational beliefs, an important role of science, at least since the age of Enlightenment. Religions can have important social benefits, and even more so when they evolve with scientific knowledge and update their claims and beliefs accordingly. We hope that this study will encourage others to use the tools of science to test other religious claims, thus contributing to bring enlightenment to their fellow human beings who still live under the influence of dogmatic religious doctrines.REFERENCES1. Up until the mid-sixties the majority of geochemists considered the current atmosphere as the final product of the degassing of the chemical elements forming the Earth's crust. They were convinced that reactions through non-biological processes had determined its current state. Oxygen, for instance, was merely supposed to be the product of the breakdown of water vapor molecules coupled with the release of hydrogen in the environment, resulting in an excess of free oxygen. It was thought that living beings simply “borrowed” gases from the atmosphere and returned them unmodified.COMPOSITION OF THE ATMOSPHERE ComponentComposition (%)Parts per million by volume in dry airParts per million by mass in dry airTotal mass (billion tons)Moist air

However, the atmosphere’s composition deviates considerably from the chemical equilibrium of the steady state. Almost everything seems to violate the rules of chemical equilibrium. In fact, the atmosphere’s composition is such a curious and incompatible mixture that it could not have formed or persisted by chance. The abundance of free oxygen on a planet determines the redox potential, which is a measure of the tendency of an environment to oxidize or to get reduced. In an oxidizing environment, a chemical element takes in oxygen. For instance, iron will rust as a result. Conversely, in a reducing, hydrogen-rich environment, an oxidized compound tends to get rid of its oxygen charge and rust will become iron again, to use the same example. The abundance of positively charged hydrogen atoms helps establish a balance between an acidic versus an alkaline environment or pH, to use chemists’ lingo. The redox potential and the pH level are two key environmental factors that determine whether or not a planet lends itself to life. The presence of free, gaseous oxygen in the atmosphere is an anomaly for chemists. Such a presence is not observed on any other planet. Oxygen is a highly reactive chemical element whose stable form is the one found in oxidized compounds such as water, carbon dioxide, carbonates, nitrates, sulfates, silicates, aluminates, metal oxides, etc. However, the amount of atmospheric oxygen is enormous: 200 grams per square centimeter of surface area, or 1,100 trillion tons in the Earth's atmosphere. The only possible explanation that can be given to the highly unlikely composition of the atmosphere surrounding the Earth lies in the fact that this atmosphere is produced on its surface daily, and that the manufacturing agent is life itself. The significant reduction in entropy and the persistent state of disequilibrium found in atmospheric gases, are clear evidence of a biological activity. The dominant gas found in the air, not in terms of amount but from a chemical standpoint, is oxygen. It establishes the energy reference level for the entire planet. It is a tradition in chemistry to express the oxidative power of an environment in terms of redox potential, measured electrically and expressed in volts. It is actually nothing more than the voltage of a hypothetical battery that has one electrode immersed in oxygen and the other in the element being studied.Sources of high potential, whether chemical or electrical, are dangerous. It is so, particularly in the case of oxygen. Our current atmosphere, with its oxygen level at 21 percent, is at the acceptable upper limit for life to be sustainable. An increase in its concentration, however small, would significantly raise the risk of an explosion. In other words, the probability for a wildfire caused by lightning to occur increases by 70 percent each time the oxygen concentration increases by one percent from its current level. If the oxygen level were greater than 25 percent, even moist vegetation would burn once the combustion process would begin. A wildfire ignited by a spark, for instance, would burn uncontrollably until the entire combustible material is consumed. This limit represents the constraint. During the terraforming operation this constraint forced the Elohim to dilute the oxygen with an inert gas: nitrogen. All the oxygen produced from photosynthesis by green plants and algae circulates in the biosphere in a relatively short time. The overall amount of oxygen in the atmosphere is kept constant, thanks to a dynamic balance between a gain, which occurs when the oxygen is produced from photosynthetic mechanisms, and a loss, which occurs from oxidation into carbon dioxide during the respiration processes. In other words, the atmospheric oxygen is balanced between input from photosynthesis and output by respiration. This cycle describes the flow of oxygen but it can never lead to a net increase in the total amount that exists in the atmosphere. Which begs the question: “How did the oxygen accumulate in the atmosphere?”Until recently, it was believed that the main source of oxygen was the photolysis of water vapor, which occurs in the upper layers of the atmosphere. During this chemical process, water molecules split and hydrogen atoms are light enough to escape the Earth’s gravitational field, leaving the oxygen atoms free to bind in pairs to form oxygen molecules or in triplets to create ozone. It is clear that this process leads to an increase in oxygen, but this increase represents a negligible source of oxygen in the modern biosphere. There is little doubt that the main source of atmospheric oxygen is the one proposed by Rubey in 1951: the entrapment in sedimentary rocks of a portion of the carbon that is fixated by green plants and algae within the organic matter of their own tissues. According to him, plant debris swept away and transported from land surfaces toward the oceans, where they were buried with sediments, had to leave an additional oxygen molecule in the air for each carbon atom extracted from the cycle of photosynthesis and respiration. By expanding this line of reasoning we realize that the main cause was in fact a massive entrapment of organic materials through a deliberate multi-step action that occurred in the preliminary phases of the Earth’s layout to make it inhabitable. If we accept the idea that free oxygen is the result of biological activity, that is, one of the end products of photosynthesis, then the equivalent mass of carbohydrates (sugars, starch, cellulose and derivatives) corresponding to this oxygen production would be about a million billion tons!If these carbonated materials were evenly distributed across the entire surface of the planet they would represent a mass of 2.035 tons of carbohydrates per square meter, or of 3.052 tons of carbohydrates per square meter if they were distributed only in the subsurface of the emerged continents. The true value must lie in between these two figures since there are buried materials offshore on the continental plateau.Where do we find these carbonated materials?- in the biomass, that is, in a closed loop- buried in the form of fossil materials- mineralized in the form of carbonatesThe biomass that we can currently observe on the Earth’s surface, in the form of plants, trees, various animals, microorganisms dispersed in the soil etc., varies between 0 and 500 kg/m2 depending on the climatic zones. If we were to use the most conservative numbers for our calculation:- average theoretical mass of carbonates and organic carbon: 2000 kg/m2- observable biomass: 500 kg/m2The difference of 1500 kg/m2 represents the "invisible" mass buried in the form of coal, oil and natural gas, that is, approximately 0.7 million billion tons for the entire planet (but most of these reserves are in a diffuse state and are therefore not exploitable). The enormous amount of buried materials suggests that it is the result of several successive burials! If the average biomass is 500 kg/m2, the entrapment of 1500 kg/m2 must have happened in at least 5 or 6 successive stages! These entrapments correspond to the boundaries between geological eras and the extinction of most of the living species present at the time. For geologists who embrace the gradualist model (the one currently taught in universities), the entrapment of organic material is a continuous process. Year after year, the cycle of life causes some organic material to fall to the ground, turning into humus, and returning to the soil. However, this model is clearly incorrect. According to us, Raelians, the emerged continents have been in place for only a very short period (25000 years) and "catastrophic" flash events swept the planet several times (stages in the layout of the original continent, then more recently the "biblical flood") burying superficial materials in the process. The Elohim, who master anti-gravitation technologies, have implemented these entrapments, which were steps in the terraforming process.NITROGENNitrogen is the most abundant chemical element in the atmosphere. It represents 78 percent of the air we breathe. The bonds that bring together two nitrogen atoms to form a molecule of nitrogen gas are among the strongest in chemistry, and consequently this gas turns out to be reluctant to react with anything at all. It accumulated in the atmosphere because of denitrifying bacteria and other processes inherent to living cells as well. It returns to its natural habitat, the ocean, only slowly through inorganic processes such as thunderstorms. Not many people are aware that nitrogen’s stable form is not nitrogen gas, but rather the nitrate ion dissolved in the ocean. If life vanished, most of the nitrogen in the air would eventually combine with oxygen and return to the ocean in nitrate form. What benefits does the biosphere gain from preserving the air saturated with gaseous nitrogen, well beyond what would seem logical from the viewpoint of the chemistry of equilibrium? There are several possible answers to this question. Firstly, a stable climate may require the current atmospheric density. In this case, nitrogen becomes a practical gas and generator of pressure. Secondly, a slow reacting gas like nitrogen is probably the best oxygen diluent in the air because, as previously mentioned, an atmosphere containing pure oxygen would be disastrous.THE EARTH BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF THE ELOHIMTwenty five thousand years ago, when the Elohim arrived, the Earth was evenly covered by an ocean and was surrounded by a thick layer of clouds moving in an atmosphere that was most likely very rich in carbon dioxide. There was no emerged continent from this ocean whose average depth must have revolved around 300 meters. Carbon dioxide being highly soluble, this ocean must have had a very acidic pH. There was no free oxygen or ozone layer in the air and consequently the surface of the continent that emerged from the Elohim’s intervention must have been directly exposed to UV radiation from the Sun. The earliest forms of life that the Elohim created had to be adapted to a hostile environment that was unsuitable for mammals and higher organisms. There is direct evidence for the existence of a complex and diversified biotope containing all the major ecological cycles prior to the appearance of free oxygen during the first geological period of the Paleozoic era (Cambrian). We can find traces of this biotope among the living organisms discovered around sulfurous hydrothermal vents. An entire batythermophilic fauna blossoms around these oases at 4000 to 5000 m deep on the ocean floor along the junction lines of the continental plates. Some of the first living beings have left tiny fossil remains called stromatolites. These are layered bio-sedimentary structures, often laminated and in the form of cones or cauliflowers. These structures are generally composed of calcium carbonate or silica and are now known to be produced by microbial activity. Some can be found in ancient rocks such as flint. Their general shape suggests that they were produced by photosynthetic organisms such as the current blue-green algae, which convert sunlight into potential chemical energy. Ultimately, the continuous activity of aerobic photo-synthesizers led to the gradual accumulation of oxygen in the air. The introduction of oxygen in an anaerobic environment must have amounted to an atmospheric ‘pollution’ accident of major proportions. One only has to imagine the effect that a marine alga successfully colonizing the sea and using sunlight to generate chlorine from chlorinated ions in ocean water would have on our current biosphere. The devastating effect of a chlorine-charged atmosphere on present-day life would be identical to the one the oxygen would have on anaerobic life when the first photo-synthesizers began to release oxygen.Whence the stages, each time forcing the development of a fauna and flora adapted to the environmental conditions of the time. Thus, this gives us a clue allowing to explain the reason for the different families of fossils that paleontologists dig up today. Moreover, oil and natural gas would originate from microorganisms developed in the first phase of the planet’s layout, whereas coal would come specifically from the subsequent phases where the atmosphere was sufficiently rich in oxygen to allow the development of ferns and all kinds of arboreal plant species. The mass of organic material developing on the soil’s surface being limited, the cumulative entrapments that we find today could only have been achieved in four, five, or even six stages!IN SUMMARYIn the primary phase of the layout of the planet, the Elohim had to modify the atmosphere’s composition. They gradually increased oxygen levels by developing a vegetation cover that they buried massively several times.Between two interventions of planetary burying, on each of the "geological layers," the Elohim developed a set of plant and animal species adapted to each of the oxygenation levels. Today, we are rediscovering these species as mineralized fossils. Coal, oil, and natural gas (and shale gas!) deposits are nothing more than traces of these successive entrapments. Another consequence addressed in other documents is the calling into question of the entire geological dating system. Stratigraphy, as well as radiological dating methods need to be challenged! The observation of our environment allows us to reconstruct the steps that took place in the laying out of the Earth and highlights the genius of our creators. It allows us to imagine the stages involved in terraforming, a process that we, humans, will replicate on other planets in a not-so-distant future…in the image of what the Elohim accomplished in ancient times.Good meditation!Marcel TerrusseNote: This article was originally written in French. A notable distinction is that the Raelian baptism is only performed on consenting adults, not on infants or children. In addition to being a symbolic rite (the recognition of the Elohim as our creators), the Raelian baptism also has a rational purpose and meaning. Called “Transmission of the Cellular Plan” (TCP), the Raelian baptism is understood as a wireless transmission of the baptized individual's genome to an orbiting computer set up by the Elohim to record the information at the precise time of the ceremony.
In 1979, Marcel Terrusse, a chemical engineer and Raelian Guide, suggested that future science would be able to read human genomes by some kind of spectral analysis, every DNA sequence having distinct vibrational properties (1). This hypothesis was largely dismissed as preposterous by mainstream scientists at the time. Today, 35 years later, Russian scientists have reported being able to distinguish DNA molecules based on how they vibrate. According to their research, DNA oligonucleotides resonate at frequencies in the terahertz range, which vary depending on the DNA sequence. Evidently, the method is still in its infancy and has only be applied to 50 and 100 nucleotide long DNA fragments so far. However, the proof of concept has now been established. The exponential nature of scientific progress suggests that in the not so distant future it will be possible to analyze entire chromosomes and even whole genomes by just recording their resonance vibrations. After all, the technique of DNA sequencing also started with very short fragments, which took days to analyze. Three decades later, entire human genomes are routinely being sequenced in just a few hours. We are happy to report once again that another part of the Elohim's Message is being validated by modern science. What was often regarded as fantastic or far-fetched is slowly becoming mainstream scientific knowledge. It's an exciting time to be a Raelian on planet Earth!1. Terrusse, M. (1979). Conversion of quiescent niche cells to somatic stem cells causes ectopic niche formation in the Drosophila testis. Cell Reports, Volume 7, Issue 3, pp 715 - 721. Phylis Hétié, a native of Burkina Faso, came to the United States several years ago to study biology. She completed her PhD at Johns Hopkins University in 2013. Her research results were published a few weeks ago in the prestigious peer-reviewed journal Cell Reports and even attracted some media attention, as can be seen here, here, here and here. Phylis kindly accepted to answer our questions and to inaugurate our series of interviews with Raelian scientists.Scientific Raelian: Thanks for accepting to do this interview and congratulations for your publication! How do you feel about your research being in the news? Phylis Hetie: Really excited! Research in general, and more particularly in biology is a very long and laborious process. It takes years to go from an idea, hypothesis, experiments to finally get to results that can tell a story. Additionally, the publication process can also be very long. So to finally get your research pass the peer-reviewing process, published in a good journal and have it in the news for scientists and non-scientists alike to see, is greatly fulfilling. It's like getting to the conclusion of a chapter; one that you wrote. It is your contribution to science, to collective knowledge. Your work may be a building block for something bigger in the future, something that could contribute to make lives healthier and better.SR: How would you explain your latest article to a non-scientific audience?PH: Using genetic techniques, I was able to convert non-stem cells (somatic cells) into a specific type of stem cells in a living tissue after I purposefully depleted the tissue of the latter. Even more interestingly, these non-stem cells are cells that were supposed to only provide signals and physical support for the stem cells, but not turn into stem cells themselves. In addition to replacing the lost stem cells, these support cells proliferated to make more of themselves and form more support locations or niches in the tissue to provide even more support space for the new stem cells.SR: What is the significance and what are the possible applications?PH: The implications of such a finding are great. If we can control the process of changing one cell type into another in a living tissue/organism, we will be able to improve many issues related to aging, injuries and diseases. During the course of aging most of our cells loose their ability to function normally. Often, cells are lost from tissues, especially stem cells that have the difficult job of keeping our tissues, therefore our body, repaired after injuries or even as part of a normal cellular turnover. When we age, in some tissues stem cells are lost or become inefficient as it is the case for stem cells that give rise to the hair and to the pigmentation in the hair. So if we were able to make new stem cells from existing cells in the tissue(s) we would be able to remedy these issues. SR: What excites you in today's science? PH: Things we can do scientifically today are amazing. But I find the possibility of things we will be able to do in the future even more exciting. In all the fields of research, which are becoming more and more collaborative and co-dependent, scientists are making breakthroughs. For example it was published just this week in the journal Science that a single factor in the blood of young mice can reverse the effects of aging in the brain and muscles of old mice. The authors are planning to take steps that will prepare their work for applications in humans in the close future. Possibilities like this are what drive me, to be part of a team that can affect human life for the better.SR: Who are the scientists that you admire?PH: There have been/are great scientists in our present time and recent past. Great minds like Einstein, Watson, Crick, Craig Venter and many other Nobel prize winners are always an inspiration. But for me, the people I admire the most are the everyday scientists i work with, my colleagues and professors. The majority of which will never get a Nobel prize or even an adequate recognition for the work they do, but they are everyday people with great ideas that move mountains. SR: How and when did you become a Raelian?PH: I officially joined the Raelian Movement and did my transmission on August 6th 48AH at Elohika at age 15. But the summer prior to that, I attended the Happiness Academy, them called seminar, and participated to the first week (the awakening seminar). I had wanted to attend seminars before then, but I was too young to do so. I have been exposed to the raelian philosophy early on in my life since both my parents have been active Raelians and part of the few first Raelians in Kama (Africa). I was amazed by the way the Raelian messages were introduced to me by my parents. In most if not all religions, parents tend to automatically enroll their kids to the group of their belief without necessarily giving them the choice or asking for their opinion. In my case, I was given a booklet with a one-page summary of about 20 different religions. It read through it and later asked to read Rael's books. It was after that that I attended my first Happiness Academy.SR: Is it challenging to be at the same time a Raelian and a scientist? Did you experience any difficulty? Did it help you?PH: To me it is not difficult being a Raelian and a scientist. It is because I am a Raelian that I am a scientist today. Being a Raelian allows me to think beyond the scientific breakthroughs we have done so far. I like knowing that the Elohim went through similar steps to get to the point where they could create life in their laboratories. The facinating idea that they created us through science made me more interested in Biology and research. It is a slow process, but we will get there; maybe with their help if we can organize ourselves to welcome them in the embassy. SR: What are your current responsibilities or activities in the Raelian Movement?PH: At the moment, one of the projects that I am involved with at the moment is the Back to Kama project led by our dear bishop Gbedia. I am also working on an exciting science video project with other Raelians.SR: What are you currently working on, at Harvard University?PH: I still do stem cell research, but this time with mammalian cells. The lab in which I work does mainly translational research. Therefore, the projects are more disease-based. The general approach is to use mature cells derived form stem cells from diseased patients, and to test various chemicals in the hope of finding one that has an effect on the disease. My own project is about muscular regeneration. The results might find applications in many disorders affecting muscles.SR: And finally, can you tell us one of the important things about the Raelian philosophy that you would like everyone to know?PH: Arts and meditation as well as science hold a key place in the Raelian philosophy. To me being a scientist is as important as finding ways to express myself artistically whether it be through cooking a meal I enjoy or dancing to the sound of African drums, or wearing clothes that are different. I take the time to give those small gifts to myself and also to meditate. I was very pleasantly surprised a couple of weeks ago when I found out about the art week at Harvard. The theme was “Make art” and throughout the campus, there were stations set up for pottery, painting, dancing, etc. For the dances, the performances were done by Harvard students and were of professional grade. So not only students are trained to excel in the classroom, they are also encouraged to explore their artistic side. And that is one thing that the Raelian messages encourage. As far as meditation, in today's fast-paced lifestyle, we tend to focus more on producing results and not taking much time to give back to ourselves. It is well known that daily meditation helps reduce stress and promotes a sense of well-being. It is encouraging to see more and more people are becoming aware of it and actually take the time to meditate.2014-05-13T05:36:00+00:00http://atheistcreationist.org/news.php?item.19.20The gift economy of free online education2014-03-29T12:00:30+00:00adminuser@nospam.comBy Damien MarsicThe concept of gift economy, in which goods or services are given away unconditionally instead of being sold or exchanged, is at the core of Paradism, the political system promoted by the Raelian Movement. Far from being a utopia, it has actually always coexisted alongside other systems in all socieites. An obvious example is the existence of non-profit, charitable organizations. Science itself is, in theory, a gift economy: discoveries made by scientists are supposed to be shared freely and openly with everyone, and this is precisely what allowed scientific knowlegde to progress so much in the last few centuries. Other recent examples of gift economies include free and open source software such as the famous GNU/Linux operating system or the LibreOffice productivity suite, the open access movement aiming at making all scientific literature freely accessible, the free content movement, open design and even open source hardware. One of the most recent expressions of the open culture is the emergence of free online education, mostly in the form of MOOCs (massive open online courses). Thanks to these developments, knowledge in almost any discipline is now really accessible by anyone with an Internet connection. No matter how old, busy, rich or educated you are, no matter where you live, if you wish you could undestand genetics or quantum physics, play guitar, learn about Chinese history or write computer programs, you now can! It's never too late or too difficult, all you need is curiosity and discipline. Let's review some of the major players in free online education.KHAN ACADEMYKhan Academy started in 2006 when Salman Khan started to upload videos on Youtube to help his younger relatives who were living far away.and who were struggling with high school maths. It became a non-profit organization in 2008 and received funding from Google and the Gates Foundation in 2010 which helped it become a world-class educational organization. Its teaching materials, on subjects ranging from math and finance to history and art, have been translated into 30 languages. Khan Academy features over 5,000 video lectures, over 100,000 exercice problems, and serves 10,000,000 students every month. Watch Sal Khan's 2011 TED talk here.COURSERACoursera is probably the number one university-level MOOC provider, with 621 courses in 13 languages from 108 Universities around the world in a wide range of disciplines. Launched in 2012, it is a for-profit company, generating revenue by charging for verified certificates. However, all courses are available for free, verified certificates being optional. Courses typically last 4 to 12 weeks, start at fixed dates and include assignments and exams with specific due dates. Coursera has 6.5 million users to date.EDXEdX is a non-profit MOOC platform founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University in 2012. It currently offers 163 courses in a wide range of academic disciplines from 45 partner universities and has close to 2 million students. Like Coursera, EdX charges for verified certificates, but all courses can be followed for free.UDACITYAccording to its founders, "Udacity was born out of a 2011 Stanford University experiment in which Sebastian Thrun and Peter Norvig offered their "Introduction to Artificial Intelligence" course online to anyone, for free. Over 160,000 students in more than 190 countries enrolled." Udacity launched in 2012 as a for-profit company. It currently offers 12 full courses, which can be accessed for free (coaching and verified certificates are offered to paying students) as well as 24 free courses. Most courses are in he fields of computer science and mathematics. Udacity has close to 2 million users to date. A convenient particularity of Udacity courses is that they can be started and completed anytime, unlike those at Coursera or EdX which start and end at fixed dates.CODECADEMYCodecademy, founded in 2011, is an online interactive platform entirely dedicated to computer programming. It offers 6 main courses: HTML & CSS, jQuery, JavaScript, PHP, Python and Ruby. Unlike the MOOC platform described above, it does not have any video lecture. Instead, each course is a step by step progression of short instructions and practice exercices. Like with Udacity, courses can be started and completed anytime, with no dates involved.WORLD SCIENCE UWorld Science U, founded in 2014 as a non-profit, is a newcomer in the world of free online science education. Its web site is divided into 3 sections (descriptions copied from World Scieence U): Science Unplugged provides hundreds of short video answers to a wide range of questions from “What is a Higgs Particle?” to “What happens to time near a black hole?” Short Courses aimed at a broad spectrum of lifelong learners, typically require two or three weeks to complete, and have no homework or exams. University Courses are university-level offerings that typically require eight to ten weeks to complete. Students work at their own pace, and will earn World Science U certification upon successful course completion. World Science U cover exclusively physics and mathematics so far.

Our scientists had started to create primitive, embryonic forms of life, namely living cells in test tubes. Everyone was thrilled by this.’(The Book Which Tells The Truth, Chapter 2, Genesis) It is a very exciting time to be a Raelian on planet Earth! We have the extraordinary privilege to witness our humanity follow the steps of our creators, as more and more scientific achievements confirm the Message of the Elohim and suggest that we are on our way to one day become Elohim ourselves. One of the most important of such scientific breakthroughs in the last 40 years was the first creation of synthetic life by Craig Venter's team in 2010.The culmination of 15 years of pioneering research and a remarkable technical accomplishment, it's above all a major milestone in the history of mankind, with far reaching social and philosophical implications. For the first time, it was demonstrated that there is nothing supernatural about life, that a living cell could be created using synthetic DNA. Humans have become gods, capable of creating and manipulating life. This work was made possible thanks to the plummeting costs of both DNA sequencing and DNA synthesis (the reading and writing of DNA), as well as technological advances allowing the synthesis and assembly of increasingly longer DNA fragments. Craig Venter has long been involved in DNA sequencing, being one of the first to sequence the human genome in 2000. He also pioneered synthetic DNA assembly, creating the first synthetic virus in 2003. In 2007, he performed the first genome transplantation, demonstrating that a bacterial species could be changed to another one by replacing its genome. In 2008, Craig Venter's team synthesized a whole bacterial genome, and two years later succeeded in combining genome transplantation and genome synthesis, resulting in the first synthetic living cell. Craig Venter heads both the J. Craig Venter Institute and the company Synthetic Genomics, and works toward creating synthetic microorganisms for the production of biofuels, vaccines or food products. Obviously, the first synthetic bacterium was just a first step in creating new life forms. In the long term, this new technology has the potential to lead to an explosion of exciting new achievements at the service of humanity, such as the creation of new forms of animal pets and even biological robots.Suggested videos:TED - Craig Venter unveils "synthetic life"
